The Progression of a Child's Vocabulary

With three kids ranging in age from 9 to 3, you can imagine there is a lot of talking that takes place in our world. Each child has his or her own individual style of speaking. Spencer speaks like any 9-year-old, and is using words that impress me pretty frequently. Maggie is on level for an almost 7-year-old and is learning too many sass words for my liking. Evan, at age 3 picks up new words daily, some of them not appropriate for his age!

He has been saying things that our 9-year-old shouldn't even say. We call them "potty words" and they are a no-no. They aren't necessarily bad words, just words that I don't want coming out of my kids' mouths... especially the little guy.

Problem is, when Evan says these words - most recently "butt" and "pee" and "poop" he gets a giggle from his older siblings. When he strings several of these words in a sentence, you'd think he was a regular comedian.

His favorite 'punch line' has been something along the lines of "Look at my butt, it's gonna poop on you." He says this while sticking his rump out towards the big kids. Honestly, it's kind of funny, in an I-should-NOT-think-this-is-funny sort of way.

It's hard to have any impact on correcting the kid when his brother and sister are laughing hysterically. Literally doubled over and in tears. Of course, Evan idolizes them, so their laugher only encourages him.

I've had to have multiple talks with Spencer and Maggie asking for their help by not laughing and to correct him when he says things like the above. It's a work in progress.

Any ideas on how to handle the progression of a child's vocabulary would be greatly appreciated.
